10/10ths Time Trials

10/10ths Motorsports is gearing up for a great new aspect to our events.

The 10/10ths Time Trials will debut in 2012 and will add an exciting new element to our already great events.  The Time Trials will be run as part of our Advanced/Instructor group and competition will be limited to those drivers.   You can still run in this group, even if you do not want to participate in the Time Trial.

The intent of the this new feature is to add an element of competitiion and fun while at the same time, advancing your high performance driving skills.  The rules will be kept as simple as possible with an emphasis on safety.   Simple is good, complex is not. I believe increasing the complexity of the event and adding hoops for you to jump through detract from your overall track event experience.  There will be no National Championships involved etc., but just a great bunch of drivers, having a great time and possibly taking home a competition award that you can be proud of.   There will be a 10/10ths Championship award for each class at the end of the year however.

Time Trials challenge you to know when your car/tires/equipment is at its best, and couple that with your starting position strategy to find that fastest lap.  You need to plan your on track position and be able to recognize when that clear lap is ahead, and your car is at its best.  There is that secret range of laps that you are looking for.  Let 10/10ths Motorsports teach you how to find it !!

As with all aspects of our events, the overriding goals and my only demands are:

  • Safety
  • Great Sportsmanship
  • Smart Driving / Situational Awareness

If we accomplish these, the event will be a success and you will be a better high performance driver at the end of the event.

What are Time Trials?

First off, Time Trials are NOT wheel to wheel racing.  Time Trials are drivers competing against the clock and searching for that one best lap that will give them the fastest time for their class.  After a practice and/or qualifying run, drivers are gridded by their best lap time, fasted to slowest.  Upon the session start, drivers are sent out, in order, for a warm up lap and as they approach the start finish, the green flag will be dropped.   Drivers will be coming towards the flag in Single File and spaced just a bit.  It is here, that you can "strategize" your start etc. to get that one great lap.   The single file row of cars, will be speeding up as they approach the flag and once the flag drops, drivers will be quickly accelerating to full speed.   This is an Advanced Level Driver activity as there can be passing anywhere on track, with no point bye.  Unlike wheel to wheel racing, a lot of passing, and getting in traffic will actually slow you down.    There will however, be a number of cars on the track at the same time.

Let 10/10ths Motorsports give you the Tiime Trial experience experience and actually teach you the strategies etc. instead of you having to learn them on your own.

Our rule book will be simple and be founded on Great Sportmanship and Smart Driving.  I don't want to over-regulate the sessions and/or confuse you with a hundred pages of rules/classifications.

The basic Time Trial Rules are:   (This is an iniitial list.  The final list of rules is being developed)

  • You must have registered in advance of the event day to participate in the TT
    • There will be a cutoff date so that the timing database can be set up prior to the event
  • You must have filled out the drivers TT Information Sheet prior to the event.  LINK
    • You only need to fill this out once per year.
  • Your car must have the assigned numbers on it.  (at least 8" high and on both sides of the car and contrasting colors)
  • You must have an AMB transponder installed in your car
  • Only Advanced Group Drivers and Instructors can participate in the TT
    • Instructors must register separately for the Time Trial portion of the event and pay the appropriate fee
  • Drivers must attend the drivers meeting
  • Any and all "incidents" will result in a post session meeting and all drivers asked to attend must attend.  Failure to attend will result in a DQ for the entire day.
    • This is not a blame meeting but rather is designed to learn from any incidents and make our events better in the future
  • The TT Director has the final say on all matters
  • The 1st session of the day will be a "practice run" so you can get yourself and your car ready and so that we can check to see if your transponder is working
    • If you do not run in the practice session, we cannot ensure your transponder is working.   If it is not working, your time will not be recorded in the qualifying or TT sessions.  This will result in a DQ for all sessions in which your transponder is not working.
    • If you do not participate in the qualifying session, you will be gridded in the rear of the TT group or at the TT Directors discretion
  • The TT Director has the sole discretion to move a driver to another TT group based on qualifying times, driver skill etc.
  • All TT Sessions WILL go on track ON TIME.  If you are late to grid, you will have to go out after the initial group leaves the hot pit, including after those drivers not participating in the Time Trial.
    • The event schedule has been set so instructors will not be coming in from an instruction session just prior to the TT session so no excuses.
